In a Tom Peter's Webex, the Future Shape of the Winner, one of the key points resonated with me -- Speed is life. That statement is becoming truer with each passing day, because technology has made it possible for business to deliver products at the speed of life. And many companies have realized that if they don't change they won't attract new customers, so they've become the adaptive organization... the company that can sense and respond to change in real time.
Yes, for some companies change equals vistas of opportunities. For those companies that are still using their father's business structures, things will almost certainly end badly. They haven't connected the dots and recognized the pattern.
There's a story pattern identified by Blake Snyder that brings closure to the idea that Speed = Life: Stasis = Death.
In short, there's a beat in the beginning of a story where the character senses that her life is going nowhere, and if she is unable to change... if things stay the same, she will surely die. She heeds the call to adventure and goes on the journey of change.
Blake provides an example of the Stasis = Death moment from the Wedding Crashers, so read his post.
PS. If you're in Dallas on March 31, you may want to sign up for the Brand You Workshop at SMU. I'm looking forward to attending the seminar in SMU's new Executive Education Center.
